Where it comes from

The story of Livi

The gens Livia was one of Rome's plebeian noble families and gave the empire its first empress. Quite separately, Shakespeare gave the name Olivia to a countess in a comedy, apparently inventing it from the Latin for olive, and it entered English from the play. Both names have been in use since, and English-speaking families clip both to Liv and Livi. The short form appears in American records under its own name in recent decades.

Meaningscholars disagree

olive, or of the Livian family

Olivia was coined by Shakespeare on the Latin oliva, an olive. Livia is a Roman family name, borne by the wife of the first emperor, whose own derivation is disputed — a connection to a word for bluish has been proposed and is not settled.

Livi sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2020, with 75 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Livi went to 48 girls in 2025, but Livvy, Livy and Livvi are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 274, which makes it the 692nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,557 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 5,866 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 33,485 for Livi itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two genuinely old names stand behind it, one Roman and one Shakespearean.
  • Four letters and two syllables, very quick to write.
  • Liv is a complete Norwegian name in its own right, so the short form has its own life.
What to consider
  • Olivia is enormously more common and will be assumed and written in its place.
  • It reads as a nickname to most people, which may matter on a formal document.
  • Livi, Livvy and Livy all appear and none is standard.
