The story of Rosetta
Rosa and its diminutives were common across Italy and Spain, and Italian emigration brought Rosetta to America in the nineteenth century in real numbers. The name's American peak came around 1890, before the great wave of Italian arrival, which suggests it was also being used by English-speaking families as an ornamental form of Rose. The stone, found in 1799 and deciphered over the following two decades, gave the word a second and quite separate fame.
Meaning
little rose
From the Italian Rosa plus -etta, the standard diminutive ending. The Egyptian town is a separate matter: its Arabic name Rashid was rendered Rosetta by European travelers, so the stone's famous name is a coincidence of European transcription rather than a shared origin.

The trade-off
- The meaning is concrete, transparent and undisputed.
- Rose and Etta are both available and are very different in register.
- It is standard in Italian, so it crosses that border unchanged.
- The Rosetta Stone is a strong association and has nothing to do with the name's meaning.
- It is period-coded to the turn of the last century in American records.
