Shelly
Feminine · “from a clearing on a ledge”
Shelly is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 84,420 girls against 2,190 boys since 1880. See Shelly as a boy name
One l and a y move this name away from the poet's surname. Shelley is the family spelling and the place name behind it; Shelly is not, and the difference is enough that most readers will not make the connection at all. Whether that is a loss depends on how much a nineteenth-century poet is wanted in a name.

The story of Shelly
The most consequential person to carry the surname was not the poet. Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein at eighteen, after a wet summer beside a Swiss lake where a group of them agreed to write ghost stories, and produced instead the first novel in English built on the premise that a scientific procedure could be carried out and would have consequences. There is no magic in it and no curse; a man does something that could be done, and the book follows what happens. That is the definition of a genre, arrived at by a teenager who had not previously published anything, and it has never gone out of print since.

from a clearing on a ledge
If the source is the surname, the place name behind it joins a word for a shelf of land to the usual element for a wood. If the source is Michelle or Rochelle, as it often is, the sense is entirely different and comes from elsewhere.

The Maureen test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Shelly's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Maureen climbed just as high around 1948, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Maureen's path sketches the road Shelly is walking now.
Shelly sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is short, warm and completely easy on first hearing.
- The spelling is plainer than the surname version and reads less literary.
- It works equally well as a full name and as a short form.
- Shelley and Shelli are both in use and the spelling gets queried.
- It is strongly tied to the decade of its peak and dates its bearer.
- The record holds a few boys as well, and the boy is much the smaller side.
