The story of Shayne
The film was adapted from a 1949 novel and the name in it is simply Shane, with no surname given — part of the character's deliberate anonymity. Its release coincided with the peak of the Hollywood Western, and the name entered American use immediately afterwards, rising through the 1950s and 1960s from near zero. It was already an ordinary name in Northern Ireland. The respellings followed, and the female Shayne peaks in 1974, in the period when short unisex names were widely used for girls before most of them settled one way or the other.
Meaning
Hebrew "Yahweh is gracious"
Shane is the Ulster anglicization of Seán, the Irish form of John, from Latin Iohannes through French Jehan. The Ulster pronunciation of Seán differs from the southern one, and Shane reflects it. Shayne is an American respelling with a y and a final e; both are silent additions and change nothing audible.

Line the two peaks up, and Robbi's path sketches the road Shayne is walking now.
