Robbi is a Germanic war name with three layers of softening on top. The story of Robbi
The Normans brought Robert to England and it became one of the most-used men's names in the language, which meant it generated an unusual number of short forms — Rob, Robin, Bob, Bobby, Dob and Hob are all recorded, the last two from a medieval habit of rhyming a nickname into a new consonant. American naming then applied its own conventions. Through the middle of the last century a bare i ending was a reliable signal that a shared name belonged to a daughter: Bobbi, Toni, Terri, Jodi, Robbi. The convention has faded and it never bound anyone, but it is why this spelling reads as it does.
Meaning
bright with fame
Robert joins two Germanic elements: hrod, fame or glory, and beraht, bright or shining — the same beraht that gives Albert, Bertha and the English word bright. So the name says something like famous and shining, assembled the way Germanic compound names were, from prestigious pieces rather than for a combined sense. The derivation is not disputed. None of the endings applied since contributes anything to it.

The Alliene test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Robbi's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Alliene climbed just as high around 1904, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Alliene's path sketches the road Robbi is walking now.
Robbi sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Roberta is available as a formal long form if one is ever wanted.
- Two syllables, front-stressed, and impossible to mispronounce in any accent.
- It works for either child, which the -ie and -y spellings do less clearly in practice.
- Robbie and Robby are both more common, and this spelling will be rewritten as one of them.
- It reads as a nickname on a document, and the formal version has to be supplied by the family.
- The bare i convention has faded, so the spelling no longer signals what it once did.
