The story of Shayden
Seaghdha was in use in medieval Ireland and survived best as a surname; the O'Sheas were a Kerry family. Shay as a modern given name comes from that line and also serves as a short form of Seamus and Shane. The -den ending is entirely different in provenance: it belongs to the family that Aidan seeded in the 1990s and that filled the American top hundred through the 2000s with Jayden, Brayden, Kayden and their spellings. Shayden joins the two, which is a common construction in that period — take a short real name and give it the current ending, as Jaylen, Braylon and Kayleen were made.
Meaningscholars disagree
hawk-like, admirable, in the Shay element
Irish Seaghdha, modern Seadha, is an old personal name generally read as 'hawk-like' or 'admirable, fine'; it gives the surname O Seaghdha, anglicized as O'Shea, and the given name Shay. That half is documented. The -den ending is not: it comes from the Aiden and Caden family, where only Aidan itself has a genuine derivation. Whether a given Shayden was built from Shay at all, or simply from the Sh- sound plus the fashionable ending, cannot be determined.
