Shariyah
Feminine
Sharia, in Arabic, is the path to the watering place. Before it meant a body of law it meant the track worn by animals and people going down to drink in a dry country, which is one of the more physical metaphors any legal tradition has chosen for itself. Shariyah is not that word, but it shares enough letters that the collision has to be addressed.

Our story of Shariyah
Our reading is that Shariyah is worth being straightforward about, because an accidental homograph with a heavily discussed word is a real thing for a person to carry. The name was built the ordinary American way, from a 1960s stem and a 2000s ending, and it peaks in 2011. Nothing in its construction refers to Islamic law. But English does not have the Arabic letters that would keep the two apart, and readers who know the legal term will see it. Families in this position generally take one of two routes: they keep the spelling and explain, or they move to Shariah, Sharia, Shariya or Sharaya, which redistribute the letters. Both are reasonable. What is not reasonable is a name page pretending the resemblance is not there, or inventing an Arabic derivation to explain it away.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Shariyah is an American formation: the stem Shari, itself a mid-century short form of Sharon or Charlotte, joined to the productive American ending -iyah. It is not the Arabic word sharia, which derives from the root sh-r-a and originally denoted the path leading to water, later the revealed path or law. The two are distinct in Arabic script, in derivation and in sound, and the resemblance in English letters is an accident of transliteration.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Shariyah's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Alberto climbed just as high around 1931, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Alberto's path sketches the road Shariyah is walking now.
