Where it comes from

Our story of Shaniya

The Sha- opening has been productive in Black American naming since the nineteen-seventies, and the -iya ending arrived later, from the same instinct that gave Aaliyah, Amiyah and Nyla their shape: a name that ends high and open carries further when it is called. Shaniya sits at the meeting of the two. What it inherits is not a language but a method, one that has been producing names in the United States for three generations and is now among the most active naming traditions anywhere in the English-speaking world.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Not documented. Shania is often said to be an Ojibwe phrase meaning on my way, a claim made popular by a singer and disputed by speakers of the language. Shaniya is a further step from that and has no source at all. The Arabic and Hebrew names that resemble it are unrelated.

Shaniya sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2010, with 517 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Shaniya went to 28 girls in 2025, but Shania, Shaniyah and Shaniah are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 130, which makes it the 830th most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,928 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 12,364 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 57,402 for Shaniya itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Nila test

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Shaniya's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Nila climbed just as high around 1935, and its whole arc is on record. The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It offers three genuine short forms of different registers, Shani and Niya and Shay.
  • The sound family is large and familiar, so nobody has to be taught to say it.
  • The open ending carries well when the name is called across a room.
What to consider
  • Shaniya, Shania and Shaniyah are all in use and near-identical in speech.
  • Two pronunciations circulate and the spelling settles neither.
  • The Ojibwe meaning attached to Shania online is disputed and should not be relied on.
