Where it comes from

The story of Nila

In the churning of the ocean, Shiva swallows the poison that rises and holds it in his throat, which turns blue. Separately, the Tamil nila means the moon, and Nila is a current name in Tamil-speaking regions. Both routes brought it to America, where Nila appears in the registers and is in current use.

Meaningscholars disagree

blue, dark blue

From the Sanskrit nila, 'dark blue' — the word behind Nilkanth, 'blue-throat', an epithet of Shiva. A second route treats Nila as an Irish name from Niall, or as a Tamil word for the moon. All three are genuine and the modern name draws on more than one.

About 1 girl in 760 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 13,856 for Nila itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The blue meaning is concrete and the Shiva story behind it is genuinely striking.
  • The Tamil moon reading is a second and equally attractive route.
  • Four letters, two syllables, and never misheard.
What to consider
  • The origin is split between Sanskrit, Tamil and Irish routes.
  • Nyla and Lila are close enough to cause confusion.
  • Neela is an equally established transliteration.
