Nylah
Feminine · “Most often read as "achiever”
Nylah is the -ah spelling of Nyla, a name that reaches English from more than one direction — Arabic Nā'ila, Sanskrit nīla, and the plain pleasure of two open syllables that end on a breath. It sits in the same sound family as Layla and Ayla, close enough to be read correctly on sight, far enough to stand apart in a classroom. Short, vowel-heavy, and easy to say in almost any language.

The story of Nylah
The older forms came first and separately. Nā'ila has been in use in Arabic-speaking communities for many centuries; nīla, the Sanskrit word for dark blue, stands behind Nila and Neela across India and Sri Lanka. Nyla appears in American records well before Nylah does, and the -ah ending arrived later, part of a broad American habit of respelling names to end on that softer letter — the same move that produced Aaliyah beside Aliya and Layla beside Leila. What that means in practice is that a Nylah today may descend from any of those lines, or from none of them, and the family usually knows which.

Most often read as "achiever, one who attains" (Arabic) or "dark blue" (Sanskrit)
Two well-documented roads lead to this sound. Arabic Nā'ila, feminine of Nā'il, means "one who attains or achieves," and gives Naila and Nyla. Sanskrit nīla, "dark blue," gives Nila and Neela, used across South Asia. A third path is simply English name-building: Ny- plus -lah, on the pattern of Layla, Kayla and Mila, chosen for sound rather than translation. The Nylah spelling is recent enough that no single one of these can claim it outright.

Pronouncing Nylah
NY-lah
Two syllables, stress on the first, rhyming with Layla's ending: NY-lah. Families with South Asian roots sometimes use NEE-lah instead, following Nila. Either is correct; it is worth deciding early which one you will be repeating.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Nylah went to 590 girls in 2025, but Nyla, Nila and Nilah and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 7 spellings went to 2,115, which makes it the 147th most-given girls’ name of the year — 356 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 760 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 2,724 for Nylah itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Larissa test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Nylah's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Larissa climbed just as high around 1994, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Larissa's path sketches the road Nylah is walking now.
Nylah sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Reads correctly on first sight for most English speakers, because it sits in the well-known Layla and Ayla sound pattern.
- Two short syllables, all open vowels — easy to say in Arabic, Spanish, Hindi and English alike.
- Genuinely uncommon: a Nylah is very unlikely to share her name with a classmate.
- Comes with real short forms already in use, Ny and Lala among them, rather than none at all.
- The spelling will need saying out loud. Nyla, Nila, Naila and Neela are all live alternatives, so expect to spell it at the doctor's office and on coffee cups for life.
- Two pronunciations circulate — NY-lah and NEE-lah — and people who know the South Asian Nila may reach for the second one.
- This is a recent name in American use. Nearly everyone carrying it is still a child, so there are few grown women named Nylah to point to yet — that changes on its own with time.
- It has stepped back a little from its high point, which mostly means fewer of them in each new kindergarten rather than any loss of familiarity.
