Mariam is the form Mary takes in the Greek of the New Testament, and the form she keeps in Arabic, Georgian and Armenian to this day — the same name Christians, Muslims and Jews have all carried, spelled the way the oldest texts spell it. In the mouth it is three unhurried syllables, MAR-ee-am, with no hard consonant anywhere. It has been in American records since the nineteenth century and is currently on the way up.

Where it comes from

The story of Mariam

The name begins as Hebrew Miryam, borne by the sister of Moses in the Torah. When Jewish translators and the writers of the Greek New Testament put it into Greek, they used Mariam — an indeclinable form that sat awkwardly in Greek grammar and so stayed close to the original sound. From Greek and Aramaic it passed into Arabic as Maryam, the name of the only woman named in the Qur'an, which devotes a sura to her; into Georgian and Armenian as Mariam; and into Latin as Maria, from which English got Mary. Mariam is therefore not a modern respelling of anything: it is one of the oldest written forms of the name still in everyday use.

Meaningscholars disagree

Uncertain; the same name as Miriam and Mary

No reading has won. The best-supported proposals trace it to Egyptian mry, 'beloved', or to a root meaning 'wished-for child'; an old Hebrew folk etymology splits it as mar and yam, 'bitter sea'. Scholars have argued over this for centuries, and the honest summary is that the name is older than any explanation of it.

Pronouncing Mariam

MAR-ee-um

English speakers usually stress the first syllable: MAR-ee-um or MAH-ree-um. In Arabic the stress moves to the middle, mar-YAM, and Georgian keeps a fuller mah-ree-AHM. All are correct for their language; it is worth deciding which one you will correct people toward.

#226
counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Mariam went to 589 girls in 2025, but Maryam and Mariyam are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 1,481, which makes it the 226th most-given girls’ name of the year — 279 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 1,085 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 2,729 for Mariam itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Recognized in Christian, Muslim and Jewish communities alike, and written the same way in all of them.
  • Spelled phonetically for English readers — no silent letters, no ambiguous vowels.
  • A written record going back to the Greek of the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament, unbroken since.
  • Also charts in France, so it travels without needing translation.
  • Several established short forms — Mari, Mimi, Ria — rather than none or one.
What to consider
  • It will be confused with Miriam, Maryam and Marium for life. All four are the same name, which makes the mix-up forgivable, but expect to spell it out at doctors' offices and on class lists.
  • The stress pattern shifts between communities: MAR-ee-um in English, mar-YAM in Arabic. Neither is wrong, and a child with family in both will simply learn to answer to both.
  • The meaning is genuinely unsettled. If you want a name whose translation you can give in one line, this one will keep resisting.
