Where it comes from

The story of Niyla

The -yla ending had a very good twenty-five years in American naming. Layla, from an Arabic name meaning night and made famous by a 1970 song, rose steeply from the 1990s; Kayla arrived from an unrelated direction and reached the top ten; Nyla, Ayla and Myla followed. Meanwhile Arabic-speaking families in America were using Nayla for its own reasons, and the two currents met in overlapping spellings. The inserted y in Niyla is an American refinement common in that period, adding a letter that changes nothing audible and marks the spelling as chosen.

Meaningscholars disagree

'one who attains', in the Arabic reading

Arabic Nayla is built on the root n-y-l, 'to obtain, to attain, to achieve', and the name means one who gets what she seeks or receives a gift. That is a settled Arabic etymology and the name is in ordinary use across the Arab world. Whether the American Niyla descends from it or from the Layla and Kayla rhyme set cannot be determined from the spelling, and the inserted y points in neither direction.

About 1 girl in 760 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 84,593 for Niyla itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, soft and easy for a young child to say and write.
  • It has a possible Arabic ancestry with a genuinely positive meaning.
  • The sound sits comfortably in a large familiar family of names.
What to consider
  • Nyla, Niyla, Nayla and Nila all circulate and are constantly confused.
  • Two vowel readings are possible from this spelling.
  • The inserted y changes nothing audible and gets dropped in writing.
