Where it comes from

The story of Lucinda

Cervantes used Lucinda in Don Quixote in 1605, and English writers of the following century took it up as one of a set of ornamental -inda names — Belinda, Clarinda, Dorinda, Melinda, Lucinda. Several passed from the page into parish registers. Lucinda entered ordinary English use in the eighteenth century and peaked in America around 1880, with a smaller revival in the 1970s.

Meaning

light

From the Latin lux, 'light', through Lucia and Lucius. Roman practice connected the name to children born at daybreak. The -inda ending is an early modern literary addition, borrowed from Belinda and Clarinda, and carries no meaning of its own.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The light meaning is transparent, undisputed and attractive.
  • Lucy and Cindy are two short forms at completely different registers.
  • It has a documented literary history going back to Cervantes.
What to consider
  • The -inda ending is an early modern ornament rather than part of the original name.
  • It is period-coded twice over, to the 1880s and the 1970s.
