Shadow is a word name of an unusual kind. Almost all English word names name a virtue, a jewel, a flower or a place — things a family wants to associate with a child. Shadow names an atmosphere instead, and it belongs with Storm, Raven, Winter and Rain to a small group chosen for mood rather than for merit. Its American peak is 1993.

Where it comes from

The story of Shadow

Word names of atmosphere are a late twentieth-century development in English naming and they arrived with a particular cultural moment: the same decades that produced Raven, Storm, Phoenix, Rain and Sky. Several of these have a history in fiction and in comics before they appear on birth certificates, which is often how an ordinary noun becomes thinkable as a name. Shadow entered American records in small numbers in the 1970s and peaked in the early 1990s, used on both sexes with a male majority. It has also been one of the most common dog names in the United States for four decades, which is a fact bearers encounter.

Meaning

a shape cast by blocking light

Old English sceadu meant shade and shadow together; the two English words are a split of one original, with shadow descending from an inflected form. The root is shared with Greek skotos, darkness, and it is one of the oldest words in the language. In English usage the word carries a companion sense as well as a dark one — a shadow follows, stays close, and cannot be separated from what casts it — and that is the sense the name most often draws on.

Shadow sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1993, with 36 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It never needs to be spelled, because every English speaker already writes it.
  • It works on either sex and carries no built-in gender signal.
  • Shad and Shay are both usable short forms with quite different characters.
What to consider
  • It is a very common dog's name in the United States, and the association is made quickly.
  • The word carries darker connotations in some contexts than a family may intend.
  • As an everyday noun it appears constantly in sentences unrelated to the bearer.
