Sarayu is a river before it is a name. The Sarayu runs past Ayodhya in northern India, and in the Ramayana it is the water beside which the whole story begins and ends. As a given name it is used in Telugu- and Kannada-speaking families, and its American record is unusually easy to read: the numbers turn upward in the years after a 2007 novel gave the name to one of its central figures.

How old is the name Sarayu?

Sarayu first appears in US birth records in 2000 — 25 years ago. The typical Sarayu is a kid of about 11 — this name's wave is very recent. About 700 people named Sarayu are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Sarayu most popular?

Sarayu peaked in 2009, reaching #3800 nationally. Today it ranks #5722, 1,922 places below that high. See the whole 2009 chart.

Where it comes from

The story of Sarayu

The Sarayu is named in the Rigveda and is the river of Ayodhya throughout the Ramayana — Rama is born beside it and, at the end of the epic, walks into it. That gives the word a weight in Indian literature that few river names carry. As a modern given name it is most at home in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka. Its American history has a second, separate cause: William P. Young's 2007 novel The Shack gave the name Sarayu to one of its three central figures, and the book sold in the millions. The American birth-record curve for Sarayu turns upward in the years that followed, and the name now has two distinct communities of bearers who rarely meet.

Meaning

the flowing one; a river of Ayodhya

Sanskrit Sarayu is generally derived from the root sr, 'to flow, to run', the same element behind sarit, 'river', and Sarasvati. It is a river name first and a personal name second, which is a very common pattern in Sanskrit: Ganga, Yamuna, Narmada and Kaveri all work the same way. The reading 'that which streams' or 'the flowing one' is standard and uncontroversial.

Pronouncing Sarayu

suh-RAH-yoo

Three syllables, stress in the middle, ending in a clear oo. The first vowel is short and unstressed, closer to the a of about than to the a of Sara. English speakers who read it as SARA-you are close enough to be understood, but the middle stress is the standard saying.

The Selby test

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Sarayu's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Selby climbed just as high around 1937, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Selby's path sketches the road Sarayu is walking now.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It has a documented, ancient meaning and a place on the map to point to.
  • Sara is available as a short form that needs no explanation anywhere.
  • The spelling is phonetic once the stress is known, and it is stable across transliteration.
What to consider
  • Stress placement is the main difficulty for English speakers, and it is often wrong at first.
  • The novel connection is well known to some American readers and unknown to others, which makes reactions unpredictable.
  • The similar Saryu spelling circulates and will produce occasional record mismatches.
