Where it comes from

The story of Sadiq

The name long predates any single bearer, but two carry it most visibly. Ja'far al-Ṣādiq, the sixth Imam of Twelver Shi'ism and a jurist whose school of law bears his name, died in 765; the epithet attached to him so firmly that Sadiq is common in Shi'i families for that reason. Muhammad himself was called al-Ṣādiq al-Amīn, the truthful and trustworthy, before his prophethood, which gives the word standing in Sunni use as well. American records show it from the middle of the twentieth century, arriving with Arab and South Asian immigration and, separately, through African American Muslim naming after the 1950s.

Meaning

Truthful, sincere

From Arabic ṣadaqa, to speak the truth. The active participle ṣādiq means one who is truthful or sincere, and the same root gives ṣadīq, friend, and ṣidq, truthfulness. The reading is not disputed in any source.

Sadiq sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2007, with 30 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled, unambiguous and admirable in every source.
  • It is recognized across the Arab world, Turkey, Iran, South Asia and the Balkans.
  • Five letters and two syllables travel easily in English.
What to consider
  • The Arabic emphatic ṣ and the q are both lost in ordinary English speech.
  • It will be spelled Sadik, Sadeq and Sadiq by different people.
  • It reads as unmistakably Muslim, which some families want and others weigh.
