Sada
Feminine · “Hebrew Sarah”
Sarah has no d in it. Sadie does. English nicknames routinely insert a consonant that was never in the name: Margaret gives Peggy, Mary gives Polly, Richard gives Dick, Robert gives Bob. Sada, peaking in 1889, is the next step along that chain, the -ie of Sadie swapped for an -a and the invented d kept.

The story of Sada
English hypocoristics do things no other European language does. Alongside ordinary clipping, English has two odd habits: rhyme substitution, which turns Rob into Bob and Will into Bill by replacing the first consonant with an unrelated one, and consonant alternation inside the word, which turns the r of Sarah and Mary into d and l. The result is Sadie, Molly, Polly, Hal from Harry and Ned from Edward, none of them derivable by rule from the source. Philologists have argued for a century about why English does this and no explanation has won. What is clear is that the process was most productive in the medieval and early modern periods and had largely stopped by the twentieth century, so the names it produced are old ones. Sada is the tail of that process, a nickname of a nickname, registered as a name in its own right in the 1880s.
Meaning
Hebrew Sarah, lady or princess
Sada descends from Sadie, a nineteenth-century English short form of Sarah, from Hebrew sarah, a woman of rank, princess or noblewoman. The d has no source in the Hebrew and is an artifact of English nickname formation. Sada is separately a Japanese name element, written with characters meaning chaste or upright, and the two are unrelated.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
