The rose came west and the word came with it. Latin rosa is not native Latin: it was borrowed from Greek rhodon, and the Greek was borrowed in turn from an Iranian language. The flower and its name traveled the same road, from Persia into the Mediterranean and then everywhere.

Where it comes from

The story of Rossie

The rose word is one of the clearest cases of a plant name following a plant. Old Persian had a word for it; Greek took rhodon and gave its name to the island of Rhodes, which used a rose on its coins; Latin took rosa; and every European language took it from Latin. The doubling in this spelling points at the other possible source. Ros in Gaelic is a headland or a promontory, and it is all over the map of Scotland and Ireland — Ross-shire, Kinross, Roscommon, Rosslare — and it produced one of the commonest Scottish surnames. Rossie is the -ie pet form, and it was given to girls and boys alike in nineteenth-century American records.

rose — or, in the other reading, a headland

Rossie may be a pet form of Rose, from Latin rosa, or of the surname Ross, which is Gaelic ros, a promontory or headland — the element in Ross-shire and Kinross. Both are documented and the spelling with a doubled s leans slightly toward the second.

Rossie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1932, with 21 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Rossie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two possible roots, both documented, and both visible on maps.
  • It serves either child, and the older records show both.
  • Two syllables and a spelling that says the vowel correctly.
What to consider
  • Rosie is far commoner and has a different vowel, so the two will be confused constantly.
  • Very few people carry this spelling now and almost all of them are old.
  • The few boys given it will be read as girls on paper.
