Rossana
Feminine · “shining”
Rossana is an Italian spelling of a Persian name, and the double s does something the original never did: it makes the Italian word for red visible in the middle. The name underneath belonged to a Bactrian woman who married Alexander of Macedon, and it means shining — which is what her name actually was, in a language that had nothing to do with Italy.

The story of Rossana
Roxane was the daughter of a Bactrian nobleman and married Alexander during his campaign in central Asia; Greek and Roman writers made much of the marriage and rather less of what became of her afterward, which was not good. The name traveled west with the histories and was revived in Europe as a literary name — most famously in a seventeenth-century French play about a swordsman with a large nose, which put Roxane in front of audiences for three hundred years. Italian produced Rossana from the same source, and it is that form, rather than the French one, that reached American records with Italian families.
Meaning
shining; luminous
Old Iranian raoxshna means bright or shining, and it is the source of the name the Greeks wrote as Roxane. It belongs to a family of Persian words about light — the same root gives the modern Persian rowshan, bright. The derivation is well established. The Italian double s is a spelling matter and adds nothing to the sense, though it does put the letters of rossa, red, in the middle of a name that means shining, which is a coincidence rather than a connection.

Pronouncing Rossana
roh-SAH-nah
roh-SAH-nah, three syllables, stress in the middle, the double s crisp and unvoiced. Italian holds the double consonant audibly; English does not and the name survives it. Roxana, with the x, is a genuinely different sound.

The Rosaleen test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Rossana's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Rosaleen climbed just as high around 1927, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Rosaleen's path sketches the road Rossana is walking now.
Rossana sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is settled, concrete and pleasant, and the person behind it is historically real.
- Ana and Rossa are both usable short forms and they go in different directions.
- Three open syllables, said as written, and easy in Italian, Spanish and English alike.
- Roxana, Rosanna and Roxanne are all close in sound and much better known, so this spelling gets substituted.
- Rosanna, with a single s and the vowels swapped, is a different name built on Rose and Anna, and the two are constantly confused.
- The double s is silent in English, so it has to be dictated and will still be dropped.
