Our story of Roshawn
What happened to Seán in America is one of the odder journeys a name has made. In Ireland it is a man's name and has never been anything else — one of the commonest there is, worn by presidents and playwrights. English speakers could not read the Irish spelling, so they wrote down what they heard: Shawn, Shaun, Shawna, Sean. Once the sound had an English spelling it stopped being tied to the Irish name, and it became a piece that could be built with. Attached to a front syllable it produced a whole generation of American names, and in the record those went increasingly to daughters — a sound that is exclusively male at home and largely female here, which is the sort of thing that only happens after a name has stopped being a word and become a building block.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The front carries no meaning. The back, Shawn, is the English spelling of the Irish Seán, and Seán means what John means — a Hebrew sentence about God being gracious — but a syllable borrowed for its sound does not carry the meaning of the name it was cut from. Claims that the name is African are common online and have nothing behind them; it was built in the United States.

Fashion outlook
Roshawn sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The stress at the back makes it carry, and it resists being shortened into nothing.
- Every sound is ordinary English, so it is never mispronounced on sight.
- It contains a name with a genuine history that a child can follow back if they want to.
- Rashawn, Roshaun and Rashaun are all close by, and his spelling will be guessed at.
- It leans to boys, but a real share of children with this spelling are girls, so forms will sometimes guess wrong.
- The African origin offered for it online is not real, and it is better to know that first.
