The story of Roselia
The festino di Santa Rosalia has been held in Palermo every July since 1625 and is one of the largest saint's festivals in Italy, which kept the name universal in Sicily. Sicilian emigration to the United States between 1880 and 1920 brought it in large numbers, and American records show Rosalia, Rosalie, Rosella and Roselia in those decades. Roselia, peaking in 1908, is the spelling that treats the first element as English rose rather than Latin rosa.
Meaningscholars disagree
From Latin rosa, the rose
Rosalia is generally derived from Latin rosa, and there was a Roman festival called the Rosalia at which roses were laid on graves — which may be the actual source rather than the flower directly. A Germanic derivation from hros, horse, plus a second element has also been proposed, as with Rosalind. The rose connection is the better supported.
