The story of Rosario
The rosary as a counted sequence of prayers took its modern shape in the fifteenth century, and devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary produced names across Catholic Europe: Rosario in Spanish and Italian, Rosaire in French. Because the devotion is Marian, the name is given to both sexes in Spanish, where devotional names cross the line freely, and it was widely used in Mexico, Sicily and the Philippines. It came to American records with families from all three.
Meaning
rosary; rose garden
Latin rosarium, a rose garden, from rosa. Medieval devotion applied the word to a set sequence of prayers, imagined as a crown or garland of roses offered to the Virgin, and the name comes from that devotion rather than from the flowers.

The Julia test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Rosario's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Julia climbed just as high around 1901, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Julia's path sketches the road Rosario is walking now.
Rosario sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is a garden and a devotion at once, and both are easy to explain.
- Charo and Rosa are established short forms with long histories.
- It is used across Spain, Italy, Mexico and the Philippines.
- It is given to both sexes in Spanish, which English-speaking paperwork handles badly.
- English readers assume it is a woman's name, so a boy will be misfiled often.
- It sounds of an earlier generation in Spanish, which is heritage to some families and age to others.
