Roni is Hebrew for my joy, and the my is the point. A whole class of Hebrew names ends in that possessive -i, so the name is spoken from the child's own mouth: Uri, my light; Gili, my joy; Ori, my light; Roni, my song. They are not descriptions of the child but sentences the child says.

Where it comes from

The story of Roni

Modern Hebrew naming, from the revival of the language onward, produced a large group of short possessive names that are grammatically first-person: Ori, Uri, Roni, Gili, Shiri, my song, and Liri. They belong to a deliberate twentieth-century move away from the long biblical names toward short, transparent, native-sounding ones, and they are among the most common names in Israel today. The American figures for the male Roni peak in 1955, which is early for the Hebrew line and probably reflects the clipping of Ronald as much as any Israeli source; both readings are live, and the spelling does not separate them.

Meaning

Hebrew "my joy" or "my song"

From the root r-n-n, to sing or to shout for joy, giving rinah, joyful song, plus the first-person possessive suffix -i. The name is unisex in Israel and used freely for both. In American records it also appears as a short form of Ronald and Veronica, which are unrelated: Ronald is Norse, from Rögnvaldr, and Veronica is Greek. The Hebrew and the clipped English name share only a sound.

Roni sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2007, with 44 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Roni went to 11 boys in 2025, but Rony, Ronny and Ronni are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 89, which makes it the 839th most-given boys’ name of the year — 6,355 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 19,192 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 155,280 for Roni itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
