Where it comes from

The story of Rony

Ronald is the English form of Old Norse Rognvaldr, brought to Scotland by Norse settlers and shortened to Ronnie in the twentieth century. Latin American families adopted the short form and respelled it Rony, dropping the doubled letters that Spanish does not use that way. The Hebrew Roni is entirely independent, built on a root for singing aloud and popular in Israel since the mid-twentieth century. American records hold both.

Meaningscholars disagree

my joy, my song

Hebrew roni is an imperative and a possessive at once — sing out, or my song — and Roni is a common name in Israel for women and men. Quite separately, Rony is the Spanish-language spelling of Ronnie, the English short form of Ronald, which is Norse: counsel and ruler.

Rony sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2007, with 61 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Rony went to 37 boys in 2025, but Ronny, Roni and Ronni are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 89, which makes it the 839th most-given boys’ name of the year — 2,342 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 19,192 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 46,164 for Rony itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Four letters, two syllables, and easy in English, Spanish and Hebrew alike.
  • Ron stands behind it as a plain, permanent adult form.
  • It works as a full name in Spanish-speaking countries and in Israel without translation.
What to consider
  • Ronny and Ronnie are the more common English spellings and will be written for him.
  • In English it reads as a nickname, which may matter on a formal document.
  • The two traditions behind it stress the name differently.
