The story of Artem
Artemios was a Greek name that passed into Christian use through a fourth-century martyr, and it reached the Slavic world with Orthodoxy. Russian and Ukrainian reduced it to Artemiy and then Artem, and the short form became the standard registered name in the twentieth century. It is now among the most common boys' names in Ukraine in particular, and it arrives in American records with families from across the former Soviet space.

of Artemis, or safe and sound
Greek Artemios is generally taken as a name derived from the goddess Artemis, whose own name has no settled explanation. A competing account builds it on artemes, unharmed or in good health, a genuine Greek word.

The Boe test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Artem's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Boe climbed just as high around 1982, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Boe's path sketches the road Artem is walking now.
Artem sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Extremely well established in Ukraine and Russia, so it has a very large community behind it.
- Art is a plain English short form available immediately.
- Five letters and two syllables, easy on any form.
- The Slavic and English pronunciations differ in both stress and vowel, so two versions will follow him.
- Artyom and Artem are the same name and relatives may use either.
- The meaning is genuinely contested, so the honest answer names both readings.
