Romona
Feminine · “protecting counsel”
Romona is Ramona with a rounder first vowel, and Ramona owes its American life to a novel. In the eighteen-eighties a writer set out to do for the treatment of California's Native peoples what Uncle Tom's Cabin had done for slavery, wrote a romance instead, and gave its heroine a name that a generation of American families then used.

The story of Romona
Helen Hunt Jackson wrote Ramona after years of campaigning about the dispossession of California's Indian communities, hoping the novel would force a reckoning. It did not. What it did instead was create a Southern California tourist industry of Ramona pageants, Ramona houses and Ramona place names, and it put the name into wide American use — which was not the intention and is a fair illustration of what novels can and cannot do. The Romona spelling appears alongside the standard one in the records of that period and probably reflects the name being heard rather than read.
Meaning
protecting counsel
Ramona is the feminine of Ramon, the Spanish form of a Germanic name, Raginmund, built from ragin, counsel or advice, and mund, protection. The Visigoths took the name into Spain and it has been there ever since. The meaning is not disputed: it describes someone who protects by advising, which is an unusually specific thing for a compound name to say. The o in this spelling changes nothing about it.

The Aletha test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Romona's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Aletha climbed just as high around 1904, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Aletha's path sketches the road Romona is walking now.
Romona sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is specific and settled, which most compound Germanic names cannot claim.
- Mona and Romy are both available and they sound like two different names.
- The o makes Romy natural as a short form, which the standard spelling does not.
- Ramona is the standard spelling and this will be corrected toward it on nearly every document.
- Since the difference is inaudible, defending the o is a purely visual argument.
- The name is closely tied to one American period and to a specific and complicated piece of California history.
