Rogelio has been on American record-keepers' lists since the early twentieth century, carried north by Spanish-speaking families and never once dropping out. The story of Rogelio
The name belongs to Spain first. A ninth-century monk named Rogellus was martyred at Córdoba under Muslim rule, and he is remembered in Spanish as San Rogelio — the reason the name stayed in Catholic use through the medieval centuries and into the modern era. From Spain it traveled with Spanish to Mexico and across Latin America, where it became a solidly ordinary given name rather than a rare one. It reached United States records in the early twentieth century along the same routes as Spanish itself, and it remains most at home in Spanish-speaking families in the Southwest and California.

Either "asked for, prayed for" or "famous spear", depending on which root you follow
One line traces Rogelio to the Latin name Rogellus, related to rogatus, "asked for" or "prayed for". The other treats it as a Spanish cousin of Rogerio and Roger, from the Germanic Hrodgar, "famous spear". Both readings are taken seriously in Spanish name scholarship, and the two names have influenced each other for centuries.

Pronouncing Rogelio
roh-HEH-lyoh
In Spanish the g sounds like an English h, and the stress falls on the second syllable. English speakers often say roh-JELL-ee-oh instead; both are heard in the US, and families usually settle on one early.

The Jerold test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Rogelio's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jerold climbed just as high around 1942, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jerold's path sketches the road Rogelio is walking now.
Rogelio sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- An unbroken record in US birth data stretching back over a century — familiar in Spanish-speaking families without ever having been a fad name.
- Several established short forms already in use: Roger, Rogelito, Chelo, Roy.
- Travels between Spanish and English easily, since Roger gives it a ready English-language door.
- Recognizably related to Rogério, Rogerio and Ruggero, so it is legible across Romance-language countries.
- One standard spelling in Spanish, which keeps written forms simple.
- The soft Spanish g is the main friction point. Outside Spanish-speaking settings the name will regularly be read as roh-JELL-ee-oh, and correcting it becomes a small lifelong habit.
- Most people carrying this name in the US today are adults rather than children, so a boy given it now will likely be the only one in his class — good if you want that, worth knowing if you don't.
- Four syllables invites shortening, and you may not get to pick which one sticks once school and friends get involved.
