Jerold

The story of Jerold
English never resolved whether the g in this name is hard or soft, because English has no rule covering a borrowed g before a vowel — Gerald is soft, Gertrude is hard, Gerard is either. American families solved it by writing what they said. Having done that, the question of the r remained open: English doubles a consonant after a short stressed vowel, so Jerrold looks correct, and the vowel here is arguably not short, so Jerold looks correct too. Both are defensible, which is exactly why both exist and neither won.
Meaning
spear-ruler
Germanic ger, a spear, and wald, rule, combine as Gerald — one who rules with a spear. The same ger opens Gerard and Gertrude; the same wald closes Ronald and Harold. Compound names were built from prestigious elements rather than for a combined image, though this pair produces a plain and vivid one. The derivation is not disputed, and no respelling touches it.

Fashion outlook
Jerold sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The j forecloses the hard-g reading that the standard spelling permits.
- One r rather than two makes it the shortest of the three spellings.
- Jerry is a ready short form and a complete name on its own.
- Gerald is the standard spelling and Jerrold is the more common respelling, so this version gets corrected in two directions.
- The doubled r is a live question and the name will be written both ways for life.
- It is strongly associated with the middle of the last century and dates a person fairly closely.
