Yasir
Masculine · Arabic roots · “one who is at ease”
Yasir comes from an Arabic root that carries the idea of ease — the same three consonants behind words for gentleness, prosperity and things made light rather than hard. It has been in continuous use since the earliest generations of Islam, and it travels the whole span of the Muslim world, from Morocco to Indonesia, with barely a change in shape. Two syllables, no silent letters, and it opens with a wide vowel that most English speakers land on first try.
How old is the name Yasir?
Yasir first appears in US birth records in 1974 — 51 years ago. The typical Yasir is a kid of about 10 — this name's wave is very recent. About 3,200 people named Yasir are estimated to be alive in the US today.

The story of Yasir
The name is Arabic, formed as an active participle of yasara, 'to be easy, to be well-off' — the same root that gives yusr, ease. It belongs to the earliest layer of Islamic history: Yasir ibn Amir, father of the companion Ammar ibn Yasir, was among the first generation of Muslims in seventh-century Mecca, and the name has never left circulation since. From Arabic it spread with Islam into Turkish, Urdu, Persian, Malay and Indonesian naming, and reached American records through twentieth-century migration, where it settled in the spelling Yasir alongside the equally common Yasser and Yaser.
Meaning
one who is at ease; prosperous, well-off
The Arabic root y-s-r covers both ease and affluence, so dictionaries and name lists gloss Yāsir either way — 'easy, undemanding' and 'wealthy' are two faces of one word, not rival theories.

Pronouncing Yasir
YAH-seer
Arabic places the stress on the first syllable: YAH-seer. Many American speakers say yah-SEER instead, and both are widely heard; the final syllable can also flatten to -sur in casual English.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Cy test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Yasir's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Cy climbed just as high around 1902, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Cy's path sketches the road Yasir is walking now.
Yasir sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

Yasir should hold steady through 2030 — the curve is flat, and flat curves are the most predictable kind.

The trade-off
- Short, two syllables, and spelled the way it sounds for English readers once they have heard it once.
- Recognized across Arabic, Turkish, Urdu, Persian, Malay and Indonesian naming, so it works in more than one language without translation.
- A documented record stretching back to the first generation of Islam in seventh-century Arabia, in continuous use ever since.
- Steady presence in US records across decades rather than a single burst — familiar without being crowded.
- Three spellings circulate in English — Yasir, Yasser and Yaser — and Yasser has been the more visible one in American print. Expect to spell it out, and to see the other versions come back on forms.
- Stress placement genuinely varies: YAH-seer in Arabic, yah-SEER from many American speakers. Worth deciding which one your family uses, since both will be offered.
- It is uncommon enough that a Yasir will usually be the only one in a school, and recognition varies a good deal from one part of the country to another — instant in some communities, brand new in others.
