Kalel
Masculine · “No official translation”
Kalel is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 4,400 boys against 15 girls since 1880.
Kalel is Superman's Kryptonian birth name with the hyphen quietly dropped: Kal-El, son of Jor-El, as DC's comics have spelled it since the middle of the twentieth century. Said aloud it is two clean syllables that land on the same -el ending carried by Daniel, Gabriel and Michael. Almost no name in use today has a source a stranger can identify that fast.

The story of Kalel
Superman was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster and first appeared in Action Comics in 1938; the Kryptonian layer of his story, including the family name El and the birth name Kal-El, was built up in the comics over the following decades and settled into the form readers know by the mid-twentieth century. Film, television and translated comics carried Kal-El around the world, and the hyphen is the first thing to go when the name moves onto a birth certificate. American parents have been recording it as the single word Kalel only in recent decades, with the heaviest use in California, Texas and Florida. It is, in the plainest sense, a name that came out of a story and then walked into real life.

No official translation; usually read as containing the element 'el', 'God' in Hebrew
The comics never gave a translation — inside the story it is simply a Kryptonian name, borne by a family called El. Alongside that sits a long-running reading through Hebrew, where 'el' means God and ends names like Daniel and Gabriel; on that basis Kal-El is often glossed 'voice of God' or 'vessel of God'. Superman's creators did not confirm it, so both readings stand side by side.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kalel went to 180 boys in 2025, but Khaleel, Kaleel and Calel and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 243, which makes it the 691st most-given boys’ name of the year — 468 places above the chart.
About 1 boy in 7,029 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 9,489 for Kalel itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Deontae test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kalel's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Deontae climbed just as high around 1999, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Deontae's path sketches the road Kalel is walking now.
Kalel sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Phonetic spelling — five letters, no silent sounds, and readable at first glance by most English speakers.
- A ready-made short form in Kal, already established through the character and usable from toddlerhood to a résumé.
- Shares its -el ending with Daniel, Gabriel and Samuel, so it sits comfortably among familiar names.
- Recognizable everywhere without being common: a child called Kalel will almost certainly be the only one in the class.
- The Superman link is instant and permanent. Most people will say something about it on first meeting, kindly but repeatedly, and that will not fade with age.
- Expect spelling questions for life: Kal-El, Kalel and Kale all exist, and people who know the character often reach for the hyphen.
- Two pronunciations circulate, KAL-el and kuh-LEL, so a small correction habit comes with the name.
- Its use is very recent, so the name has no older generation behind it — it will read as belonging to the young for some years yet.
