Gianluca
Masculine
Italian has long had a habit of fusing two baptismal names into a single written word — Gianfranco, Gianmarco, Gianpaolo — and Gianluca is the one that has traveled furthest. Four quick syllables that land on the LOO, carrying the ancient Hebrew Yohanan and the Greek Loukas together in one breath. In the US it arrived with Italian families and has held a small, unbroken place ever since.

The story of Gianluca
Giovanni came into Italian from Latin Ioannes, which the Greek translators of the Hebrew Bible had made from Yohanan; Luca came by way of Greek Loukas into Latin Lucas, the name of the evangelist. Italian naming practice let two saints' names be given together, and in speech Giovanni wore down to Gian, so Gian Luca eventually closed up into one word. Compounds of this shape spread widely through Italy in the twentieth century, Gianluca among the most common of them. It reached the United States with Italian emigration and has stayed in continuous, quiet use, holding strongest where Italian-American communities are largest.

"God is gracious" (Giovanni) joined to Luca
The first half is settled: Gian- is a clipped Giovanni, from Latin Ioannes and ultimately Hebrew Yohanan, "God is gracious." The second half is where sources part. Most derive Luca from Greek Loukas, meaning a man from Lucania in southern Italy; others link it to Latin lux, "light." Both readings are seriously held, and Italian families have used the name under either.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Grayling test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Gianluca's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Grayling climbed just as high around 1959, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Grayling's path sketches the road Gianluca is walking now.
Gianluca sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

Where Gianluca is headed
Gianluca should hold steady through 2030 — the curve is flat, and flat curves are the most predictable kind. Its history is short or jumpy, though, so read this as a sketch rather than a promise.

The trade-off
- Comes with two short forms that already work as full names on their own: Luca and Gianni.
- Luca is widely recognized in the US, so the everyday version needs no explaining even when the full name does.
- Both halves have equivalents in French, Spanish, Portuguese and English, so the name has a counterpart almost anywhere it travels.
- A clear, unbroken Italian record behind it, with the Gian- compound pattern shared by Gianfranco, Gianmarco and Gianpaolo.
- Distinctive in an American classroom without being invented — a long-established name that is simply uncommon here.
- Expect corrections. Americans meeting it in writing often try a hard G or a three-syllable "gee-ah-noo-ka," and the one-word spelling gets split into Gian Luca on forms.
- At nine letters it is long beside a long surname, and much of the world will settle on Luca within a week. If you would be unhappy hearing Luca every day, that is worth knowing now.
- The name announces Italian heritage plainly, which is a gift in some families and a slight mismatch in others.
