Where it comes from

The story of Robet

Two Roberts are worth knowing, and between them they show how far a name can travel. Robert Hooke put a sliver of cork under a microscope, saw that it was divided into tiny chambers, and called them cells because they reminded him of the rooms monks slept in — so the founding word of biology came out of a monastery by way of a metaphor. And Robert of a different kind: an army engineer named Henry Martyn Robert was asked to chair a church meeting, found it dissolving into chaos, and was embarrassed enough to go away and write down rules for running one. Those rules still govern how American boards, clubs and legislatures conduct themselves. One meeting went badly and a whole country changed how it argues.

Meaning

Bright fame

The Germanic original joined two elements, hrod meaning fame and beraht meaning bright, and the compound came into England with the Normans. The reading has never been in doubt. Nothing about the shortened spelling changes it.

Fashion outlook

Robet sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The name it rests on is understood everywhere in the Western world and needs no explanation.
  • It comes with the deepest set of short forms any English man's name has.
  • The meaning is settled, plain and easy to tell a child.
What to consider
  • It will be read as a typing error for as long as he lives, and corrected on forms without being asked.
  • He will spend a moment of every introduction confirming that the missing letter is deliberate.
  • All the history, all the famous bearers and all the meaning belong to the longer spelling, and this one borrows them.
