Where it comes from

The story of Rinaldo

A Saxon composer in his twenties arrived in London, was asked for an Italian opera, and wrote one in a fortnight by reusing music he had already written elsewhere. The subject was a knight from an epic about the First Crusade, and the production leaned hard on spectacle: real birds released into the theater, a sorceress, a flying chariot. Critics complained about all of it and audiences filled the house. One aria from it — a lament sung by a captive princess, borrowed from a piece he had written in Rome — became one of the most recorded songs in the language and is still sung by people who could not name the opera it comes from. Handel stayed in England for the rest of his life. The character's name is older than any of this, and belongs to the same family of romances that gave Italian its Orlando.

Meaning

ruler by counsel

From the Germanic elements meaning counsel or the counselling powers, and a ruler. The same name is Reynold and Reginald in English and Renaud in French; Italian took it in through the medieval romances rather than through the church, which is why it kept the heroic associations and not the saintly ones.

Rinaldo sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1921, with 21 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Rinaldo sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Three syllables with middle stress is a comfortable and memorable rhythm.
  • Aldo and Rino are both complete names and give very different options.
  • The name is at home in Italian, Spanish and Portuguese without being changed.
What to consider
  • Reynaldo and Reinaldo are both recorded and will be written for it.
  • The name reads as strongly Italian, which some families want and others do not.
  • It is long to write out in full on forms designed for shorter names.
