The story of Rhythm
The Greeks used rhythmos for measured movement generally, and the musical sense narrowed later. English took the word in the sixteenth century and kept the Greek spelling almost intact, which is why it carries a silent h in two places and a y where an i would do. As a given name it is very recent and thoroughly American, belonging to a small group of word-names — Harmony, Melody, Cadence, Lyric — drawn from music rather than from nature. Of that group it is the only one that is genuinely difficult to spell.
Meaning
measured flow; movement in time
Greek rhythmos, from rhein, 'to flow' — the same root behind the philosophical tag that everything flows. It reached English through Latin rhythmus and French. The word originally meant measured motion of any kind, not only in music, which is why it can describe a season, a walk or a poem as easily as a drum.

Pronouncing Rhythm
RIH-thum
Two syllables, stress on the first. The first h is silent and the y is said as a short i. Nobody mispronounces it; the whole difficulty of this name lives in the spelling.

The Cesia test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Rhythm's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Cesia climbed just as high around 2009, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Cesia's path sketches the road Rhythm is walking now.
Rhythm sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Said correctly by every English speaker at first hearing.
- A word with a clean Greek etymology and a meaning that is precise rather than vague.
- Sits in an established American family of music names — Harmony, Melody, Lyric — so it is not isolated.
- It is among the most misspelled words in English, and the child will be correcting it for a lifetime.
- It is a common noun before it is a name, and it will be read that way first.
- Word-names of this kind date visibly to the period that made them fashionable.
