Rhyan is Ryan with an rh, and the digraph is borrowed from Greek: English writes rh only in words that came through Greek — rhythm, rhetoric, rhinoceros. Putting it on an Irish name is a purely visual decision.

Our story of Rhyan
The rh spelling is a small piece of borrowed prestige and its logic is worth spelling out. English inherited rh from Latin transliterations of Greek, where it marked a particular kind of r; the letters survive in rhythm, rhyme, rhetoric and rhododendron, all of which are learned words. Welsh uses rh for a genuinely different sound, which gives Rhys and Rhiannon their spelling. Neither applies to an Irish name, so an American Rhyan is reaching for the look of one of those traditions without the substance. The 1985 peak sits inside Ryan's own enormous American run, which is when the material was most available and the pressure to differentiate strongest.

Little king
Ryan comes from the Irish surname Ó Riain, from a personal name generally derived from rí, king, with a diminutive ending — that reading is standard though not certain. The rh spelling has no basis in Irish, where the sound is a plain r; it is borrowed from the English convention for transliterating Greek rho with its rough breathing, as in rhapsody and Rhys.

The Kenard test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Rhyan's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kenard climbed just as high around 1964, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kenard's path sketches the road Rhyan is walking now.
Rhyan sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
