Where it comes from

The story of Reubin

In Genesis, Reuben is the eldest of Jacob's twelve sons, but in his final blessing Jacob tells him he is 'unstable as water' and will not have the firstborn's pre-eminence; his tribe settled east of the Jordan. The name stayed in use among Jews and Protestants, and in America it was given to sailors and farmers alike. On 31 October 1941 a German submarine sank the destroyer USS Reuben James, named for a sailor of the Barbary Wars, while it was escorting a convoy; about a hundred of its crew died, weeks before Pearl Harbor, and Woody Guthrie wrote a song asking the names of the men who went down. Reubin is one of the spellings American families have used.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Sounds exactly like Reuben, a name with a long biblical and American history.
  • A settled, easily explained meaning.
  • Comes with Ben as a ready short form.
What to consider
  • Reuben is the spelling people expect, so it will need spelling out.
  • The traditional short form, Rube, is also slang for a country bumpkin.
