Our story of Renardo
Old French had a perfectly good word for a fox: goupil. Then, in the twelfth century, a cycle of satirical animal poems became enormously popular across northern Europe, in which the trickster fox is a character with a name, Renart, who outwits the wolf, the lion and everybody else. The poems were so widely read and quoted that the character's name began to be used for the animal, and within a couple of centuries it had pushed out the older word entirely. Modern French says renard because of a medieval bestseller. It is the clearest case in any European language of a fictional character's name replacing an ordinary noun, and it happened to a word people used every day.

Fashion outlook
Renardo sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Ren and Nardo are both available as short forms and both stand alone.
- Three open syllables work in English and Spanish alike with only a shift of vowel quality.
- It is recorded for boys and for girls, so it leaves a question open rather than closing it.
- The spelling is recorded for a few girls, but nearly every child with it is a boy.
- Reynardo, Renard and Reynaldo are all in the record, so the spelling will be checked back with you.
- No origin is documented for this exact form, so the meaning question belongs to the older name.
