The story of Raynaldo
Shakespeare gives the character two hundred lines of instruction and then forgets about him. Polonius sends him to Paris with money for his son and a plan: do not ask about him directly, but invent small vices, drop them into conversation, and let people correct you. It is a scene about how information actually travels, and it is one of the very few passages in the play with no bearing on the plot at all, which is presumably why it is cut from most productions. The name reached Spanish through the same Germanic stock that gave French and English their versions, arrived in the Americas with Spanish settlement, and has stayed in use across Latin America ever since. The respelled first syllable is a twentieth-century American addition and belongs to a habit rather than to a tradition.
Meaning
counsel, ruler
Two Germanic elements, one meaning advice or counsel and one meaning power or ruler, joined in the ordinary way. The reading is settled and the same pair produces cognate names across the Germanic and Romance languages. The ay spelling of the first syllable is an American respelling of a vowel that Spanish writes with a plain e, and it adds nothing to the sense.
How the name formed
- A Germanic compound of counsel and power
- Reinaldo and Reynaldo in Spanish and Portuguese
- Carried into the Americas with Spanish settlement
- Raynaldo, with the first syllable respelled
Related forms: Reynaldo · Reinaldo · Rinaldo · Reynold
Pronouncing Raynaldo
ray-NAHL-doh
Three syllables with the stress in the middle. Spanish says the first syllable with a shorter vowel than the ay spelling suggests, closer to reh, so the respelling has genuinely shifted the sound toward English.

Fashion outlook
Raynaldo sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is a real inherited name with a documented meaning across several languages.
- Rey and Naldo are two very different short forms and both stand alone.
- The respelled front makes the pronunciation obvious to English speakers.
- Reynaldo and Reinaldo are both commoner and this spelling will be corrected into one.
- The ay spelling moves the name away from Spanish, which may or may not be wanted.
- It is long enough that it will be cut down by everyone outside the family.
