Rasheem
Masculine · “Merciful”
Rasheem sits between two Arabic names and can be read as either. Raheem and Rasheed are separate words with separate meanings, and this spelling has a foot in each, which is a common outcome in American respellings of Arabic names, where the sounds arrive well before the spellings do.

The story of Rasheem
Ar-Rahim is one of the ninety-nine names of God in Islam, and it stands in the formula that opens every chapter of the Quran but one: in the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate. Two words from the same root sit side by side in that line, which is said before eating, before writing and before beginning almost anything. The name reached English-speaking America through conversion and through the naming culture that came with it, and it reached it by ear. Arabic has two h sounds, one much like the English h and one made further back with the throat narrowed, and English spells both with the same letter, so the second simply disappears in transit. What arrives is a name that has to be respelled before it can be said, and Rasheem is one of the spellings that resulted.

Merciful
If the name is Raheem, the word is rahim, merciful or compassionate, one of the divine attributes. If it is a form of Rasheed, the word is rashid, rightly guided or of sound judgment. The s in the middle points to the second and the long ee at the end points to the first. Both are real names in wide use, and an American birth record preserves nothing about which one a family had in mind.

Pronouncing Rasheem
ruh-SHEEM
Two syllables with the stress at the back and a long ee in it. The first vowel is reduced almost to nothing in American speech, which is why the name is also written Rashiem and Rasheim without any change in sound.

Fashion outlook
Rasheem sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The stress falls at the end, which gives the name a definite finish and makes it carry well across a room.
- It is recognizable to Arabic, Turkish, Urdu and Malay speakers even in this spelling.
- Several natural short forms, and none of them collides with a common English name.
- This spelling is one of several for the same sound, so it will be written Raheem and Rasheed by people acting in good faith.
- The Arabic consonant behind the name cannot be produced by the English spelling, so the original pronunciation is not recoverable from the page.
- Because the source is ambiguous, a child asking what the name means will get two answers rather than one.
