The story of Ramond
The most consequential man of the name led an army to Jerusalem and then refused the throne. He was the oldest and richest of the leaders of the First Crusade, took the cross in his fifties having already fought in Spain, quarreled with everybody, and when the city fell was offered the kingship and declined it — reportedly on the grounds that he would not wear a crown of gold where another had worn one of thorns. Somebody else took the title within days and used a different formula to get round the same objection. He spent his remaining years besieging Tripoli.
