Where it comes from

The story of Rafeal

The painter's fame did something no other artist's has done: it produced a movement named after the period before him. A group of young English painters decided that art had gone wrong at exactly the point where Raphael made everything look effortless, and called themselves the Pre-Raphaelites — not against him personally, but against three centuries of schools teaching his balance as a rule. The workshop he ran was its own innovation. Fifty hands worked under him on frescoes, portraits and cartoons, with assistants trained to paint in his manner so completely that scholars still argue about which passages are his. That system — a studio as a business with a house style — is how large-scale painting was done for the next three hundred years.

Meaning

God heals

The Hebrew joins a verb about healing to the name of God, and the reading is not disputed. In the older tradition Raphael is the archangel who travels in disguise and cures what is wrong — a name that is, grammatically, a short sentence.

Fashion outlook

Rafeal sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled, warm and easy to explain.
  • It is at home in Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and English without adjustment.
  • Rafa and Rafe give it two short forms with very different registers.
What to consider
  • The transposed letters will be corrected on every form he ever fills in.
  • The spelling invites a wrong pronunciation from anyone reading it cold.
  • Rafael, Raphael and Raffael are all in use, which means three chances to get his wrong.
