Pheonix
Masculine · “the mythical bird”
Pheonix is given to both — 573 boys and 439 girls since 1880. See other names given to both
Pheonix transposes two letters of Phoenix, and the transposition is easy to make because the oe digraph is genuinely strange in English — a Greek diphthong that Latin kept and English inherited without any rule for reading it. The bird's name is one of the most loaded words in the Greek language, and it means at least four different things. This spelling peaks in 2006.

The story of Pheonix
The phoenix story reaches Greek through Herodotus, who reports it from Egyptian priests, and it may descend from the Egyptian bennu, a heron associated with the sun and with rebirth. Rome took it up, early Christian writers used it as an image of resurrection, and it has been in Western symbolism ever since. English use as a given name is modern and rose sharply after 2000, on both sexes, as part of the broader taste for word names of power. The oe spelling is a trap: English has no reliable rule for the digraph — compare fetus, amoeba, Oedipus — so transposing it to eo is a very natural error, and once a family has done it, the spelling stands.

the mythical bird; also 'purple-red' and 'Phoenician' in Greek
Greek phoinix carries several senses that were probably one word: the mythical bird that burns and is reborn, the color purple-red, the date palm, and a Phoenician. Which sense came first is genuinely argued. The Phoenicians were named by the Greeks either for the purple dye they traded or the other way round; the bird may be named for its color. The word is also the ancestor of the Greek name for the palm tree, which regenerates after fire.

Two syllables, stress on the first, exactly as the bird and the Arizona city. The transposed letters change nothing about the sound; the ph is an f and the vowel is a long e either way.

The Eliu test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Pheonix's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Eliu climbed just as high around 1962, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Eliu's path sketches the road Pheonix is walking now.

The trade-off
- The sound is universally familiar through the bird and the city.
- Nix and Fen are both usable short forms with a modern character.
- The Greek word behind it is unusually rich, with four documented senses.
- It will be corrected to Phoenix by essentially everyone, including software.
- The transposition reads as a spelling error rather than a variant to most adults.
- The oe digraph has no reliable English rule, which is what made the error easy in the first place.
