Page the name and page the sheet of paper are two different words. The one in a book comes from a Latin word for a column of writing; the one in a household comes, probably, from a Greek word for a child, through Italian and French. They arrived in English separately, several centuries apart, and settled on the same four letters by accident.

The story of Page
The household position was the first stage of a formal system. A boy of the right family entered another household at seven or so as a page, learning manners, service and the beginnings of arms; at about fourteen he became a squire, attached to a knight and responsible for his horse, armor and equipment; and if things went well he might be knighted in his twenties. The whole arrangement was an apprenticeship in which the training was social as much as military, and the point of sending a child to somebody else's house was to build the network of obligation that held the aristocracy together. The word survived the system by six hundred years, first as an occupational surname and then, in America, as a first name given increasingly to daughters.

a young attendant
The name descends from the household word, which described a boy in service in a noble house. Its own origin is disputed: the usual account traces it through French and Italian to a Greek word for a child, and a competing one connects it to a Latin word about the countryside. The paper word is unrelated and comes from a Latin verb about fastening, by way of columns of text fastened together.

The Evelynne test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Page's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Evelynne climbed just as high around 1916, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Evelynne's path sketches the road Page is walking now.
Page sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- One syllable, no ambiguity, and nothing at all to explain.
- It works on the register for either child and always has.
- It has a genuine occupational history behind it rather than an invented one.
- Paige is the commoner spelling and this one will be converted into it constantly.
- The paper word is what most people will think of first, and it is a different word.
- There is no short form available, because there is nothing to shorten.
