Onika
Feminine
English naming barely uses the letter O. Olivia, Owen, Oscar, Opal and Otis are most of the list, and the initial is far rarer in names than its frequency in the language would predict. A- and M- names are everywhere; O- names are a small club, which makes any of them distinctive by position alone.

Our story of Onika
Our reading is that the distribution of initial letters in the American name stock is uneven in a way that has consequences. J, M, A, K, C and S dominate; O, U, Q, X, Y and Z are barely used. That is not a reflection of how common the letters are in English text, where O is the fourth most frequent letter overall. It reflects the name stock's history: the biblical, Germanic and Celtic sources that supplied most European names simply produced few names starting with O. What that means for a coinage is that an O- initial does an enormous amount of distinguishing work for free, because there is so little competition. The same is true of U and, at the other end, of Z, which is why Z names have become popular with parents looking for something visually distinct. The alphabet is not evenly settled, and the empty spaces are useful.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
