Helene came into Slavic languages through Byzantine Christianity, and each language reshaped it: Russian made Yelena, Ukrainian made Olena, Serbian made Jelena. The o at the front of the Ukrainian form is a regular development and not a variant spelling. Olena is one of the most common women's names in Ukraine and has been for centuries. The American record is where the two histories cross: the 1880s numbers sit in a period of heavy Scandinavian and German migration, when Helena, Lena, Olena and Alena all circulated as related forms in the upper Midwest. Ukrainian Olenas are a separate and much later group, and the birth records cannot tell the two apart.

Greek Helene has never been securely explained. The traditional derivation connects it to helene, 'torch', or to a root for brightness, and that reading is the one most often given. A substantial body of specialist opinion holds the name to be pre-Greek — belonging to the language spoken in the Aegean before Greek arrived — and therefore unrecoverable. Olena inherits both the name and the uncertainty. Ukrainian has simply dropped the initial aspirate, as Slavic languages regularly do with Greek names.
