Spanish sexes names by their endings, and Odalis is one of the few it cannot. A name ending in -a is female and one ending in -o is male, with almost no exceptions; a name ending in -is falls outside the system, which is why Odalis is given to boys and girls alike in the Dominican Republic.

Where it comes from

Our story of Odalis

Our reading is that Spanish naming is unusually rule-bound about sex and that the exceptions are worth noticing. The system is simple: -o is masculine, -a is feminine, and it applies to nouns, adjectives and names alike, so a Spanish speaker meeting an unfamiliar name ending in either can assign a sex without hesitation. That leaves a small set of endings the rules do not cover, and names built on them can go either way: -is, -e, -i and consonant endings all produce unisex or ambiguous names. Guadalupe, Trinidad, Rosario and Refugio are unisex for related reasons, taking their gender from the noun behind the devotion rather than from the ending. Odalis and its relatives are modern coinages that landed on one of the free endings, and the ambiguity is a consequence of the ending rather than a choice anyone made.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Odalis has no established etymology. It is a Caribbean Spanish coinage, chiefly Dominican and Cuban, built on an -alis or -alys ending shared with Arelis and Yarelis. A Germanic derivation from odal, an ancestral estate, is sometimes claimed and is not supported. The name is used for both sexes. It peaks in the American data in 1998.

Pronouncing Odalis

oh-DAH-lees

Three syllables, stress on the second. Spanish stress falls on the second-to-last syllable in words ending in s, which is what puts it there. English speakers say OH-duh-lis with the stress at the front.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Odalis went to 11 girls in 2025, but Odalys is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 50, which makes it the 910th most-given girls’ name of the year — 7,950 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 32,145 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 146,115 for Odalis itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

  • It is unisex in Spanish, which is unusual and useful.
  • Oda and Lis are two usable short forms.
  • The rhythm is even and easy to say.
What to consider
  • No meaning can be given, and the ones in circulation are invented.
  • English speakers move the stress to the front.
  • Odalys and Odalis both circulate.
