The story of Nnamdi
Igbo naming is propositional: Chukwuemeka, God has done well; Ngozi, blessing; Nnamdi, my father is alive. The last belongs to a set given when a child is born after a grandfather's death, and it carries a belief about continuity between the generations that long predates Christianity in the southeast of Nigeria. Nnamdi Azikiwe, born in 1904, edited newspapers, led the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons, and became the first President of Nigeria in 1963; his name went around the world with him. American records show Nnamdi from the 1970s with Nigerian immigration, peaking in the late 1990s, and the NFL defensive back Nnamdi Asomugha, an All-Pro in the late 2000s, made the spelling familiar to a much wider American audience.
Meaning
My father is alive
From Igbo nna, father, m, my, and dị, is or lives. The name belongs to the class of Igbo names asserting that a departed relative has returned in the child; it is a statement about the family, not a description of the child. The reading is settled and transparent to any Igbo speaker.
Pronouncing Nnamdi
NAHM-dee
Two syllables in ordinary English. Igbo has a syllabic n at the front, so a careful saying is closer to n-NAHM-dee with the first n given its own beat, and the language is tonal, which English does not reproduce.
