Nishka
Feminine · “Sanskrit nishka”
In the Rigveda a nishka is both a gold necklace and a unit of payment. Jewelry and money were the same thing in a society with no coinage: value was worn, and paying someone meant handing over an ornament. The word survived into later Sanskrit as a specific weight of gold.

The story of Nishka
Pre-coinage economies across Eurasia used ornaments as stores of value, and the vocabulary records it. Sanskrit nishka is a neck ornament and a payment. The English word for money, from Latin moneta, comes from a title of the goddess Juno beside whose temple Rome minted; but the older Germanic word for wealth is fee, from feoh, cattle, which is also the source of fee in the legal sense. Latin pecunia, money, is from pecus, cattle. Slavic and Baltic have similar pairings. What these tell us is that the abstract idea of money was late and that before it, wealth was a specific set of things you could count: animals, metal by weight, and ornaments that could be worn and handed over. The Rigveda's nishka belongs to that world, and the name is one of the older words still given to children.
