Nicholaus is an English name wearing a German ending. English writes Nicholas; German writes Nikolaus, with the au that belongs to the Greek original. This spelling takes the English body and the German tail, which is not a mistake so much as a compromise between two entirely legitimate ways of writing the same very old name.

Where it comes from

The story of Nicholaus

Nicholas of Myra was a fourth-century bishop in what is now Turkey, and the stories told about him — secret gifts, rescued children, saved sailors — made him one of the most widely venerated saints in both Eastern and Western Christianity. Dutch settlers in New York brought their name for him, Sinterklaas, and English speakers heard it as Santa Claus, which is how a Greek-named bishop from Asia Minor became an American figure in a red coat. The au spelling belongs to the German and Scandinavian line of the same name, and in American records it usually marks a family reaching for a fuller, more formal version.

Meaning

victory of the people

From the Greek nike, victory, and laos, the people — the same laos behind laity and the same nike behind a great many Greek names. It is a compound of the plainest kind, and there is nothing contested about it.

NIK-uh-lus

Three syllables, stress on the first, said exactly as Nicholas is said. German gives the au a full ow sound — NEE-ko-lows — but American speakers do not, and the spelling changes nothing here.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The name behind it is among the most widely used in the Christian world, east and west alike.
  • Nick, Klaus and Cole are all available, and they could hardly be more different from one another.
  • The meaning is clean and easily told in three words.
  • The au ending is a real spelling in German rather than an American invention.
What to consider
  • Nicholas is the standard English spelling and will be written on nearly everything.
  • Nicolaus, Nikolaus and Nicholaus all exist, and the exact arrangement will need dictating.
  • Because the change is inaudible, nobody will ever learn the spelling by hearing the name.
