The name underneath is one of the oldest and most consequential in the Hebrew Bible, and it has a companion most people never notice: run the same Hebrew name through Greek instead of English and it comes out as Jesus. Two of the best-known names in the Western world are the same name in different clothes.

Where it comes from

The story of Jashua

Joshua is the successor of Moses in the Hebrew Bible, the man who leads the people across the Jordan, and a book is named for him. His name stayed in Jewish use continuously, was taken up by English Protestants in the sixteenth century, and became an ordinary American boy's name in the twentieth. The a-spelling appears once a name is being written constantly by people who have only ever heard it — the first vowel of Joshua is unstressed and reduced in speech, so it can be written a or o with no change in sound at all. That is how most respellings begin.

Meaning

the Lord is salvation

From Hebrew Yehoshua, built from the divine name and a verb meaning to save or rescue. The shortened later Hebrew form is Yeshua, and that is the form Greek transliterated as Iesous, which Latin made Iesus and English made Jesus.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is heard as a name everyone knows, so it needs no introduction out loud.
  • Josh is waiting as a short form and requires no explanation anywhere in the English-speaking world.
  • The name behind it has been in continuous use for three thousand years and belongs to two religions.
What to consider
  • The correction to Joshua will come from teachers, forms and software for a lifetime.
  • Because the difference is silent, the spelling has to be dictated letter by letter every time.
  • Josh erases the distinction entirely, which many children eventually decide they prefer.
